Description

Remastered and Reissued As Part of the Blue Note 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign.

Some musicians are sufficiently inspired and influential to be labeled epoch-making. Miles Davis made new jazz epochs every few years. For nearly five decades he was at the center of the music, charting directions and introducing other legendary figures at a rate that is unmatched by his contemporaries in any art form. Originally issued in 1956, Volume 1 is the first of two compilation albums comprised of early hard bop material Miles recorded for the Blue Note label between 1952-1954. Volume 1 features the May 1952 and April 1953 sessions. Both dates finds Davis working in a sextet; the first with Jay Jay Johnson (trombone), Jackie McLean (alto saxophone), Gil Coggins (piano), Oscar Pettiford (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums); and the second with Jay Jay Johnson (trombone), Jimmy Heath (tenor saxophone), Gil Coggins (piano), Percy Heath (bass) and Art Blakey (drums).
