Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as rock, pop and electronic musical styles were invented and widely popularised. As well as his incredibly successful musical career, Sinatra hosted TV and radio shows, and was also an Academy Award-winning actor.

In the early 1940s, big-band music in America defined and dominated pop culture. To be a singer in the most popular big band of the era was a dream come true for Frank Sinatra from Hoboken. He was at center stage during one of the most exciting times in modern music: the glory days of swing. From the moment he appeared solo on stage at New Yorks Paramount Theatre on December 30, 1942, he walked into the annals of show business. The sound that greeted me, he recalled, was absolutely deafening, a tremendous roar. The 5,000 bobby-soxers who packed the theater were yelling, screaming, applaudingeven fainting in ecstasybefore he opened his mouth to sing. By the end of his first run at the Paramount, this skinny 27-year-old baritone was a household name from coast to coast.

It was more than just the splendid purity of that sweet young voice, more than the seamless phrasing and heartfelt reading of the lyrics that became his trademark. For those who watched him on the bandstand, even in his earliest days with Dorsey, it was the shock of those blue eyes and the longing and loneliness behind their twinkle. The stance, the lean body, the quivering lower lip. The expressive hands. The soft speaking voice. The shyness. The vulnerability. That needy, hungry quality. With their boyfriends off at war, teenage girls wanted to feed him, take care of him-make love to him.
