Released in 1970, The Man Who Sold the World is David Bowie’s third studio album and a dramatic departure from his earlier work. Heavier, darker and more unsettling than anything he had recorded before, it marked the beginning of his most creatively fertile period and introduced the hard rock sound he would develop with Mick Ronson throughout the Ziggy Stardust era.
The title track — later covered by Nirvana on MTV Unplugged — is among Bowie’s most enduring compositions. Width of a Circle, All the Madmen and Running Gun Blues round out an album that sounds as strange and compelling today as it did over fifty years ago.
