Description

Released March 2021

In response to popular demand Knitting Factory Records reissue six of Nigerian icon and Afrobeat originator Fela Kuti’s most important albums. This will be the first time they are released individually since their original vinyl release in Nigeria in the 70s and 80s.

The LPs feature Lemi Ghariokwu’s iconic artwork and include digital download card and liner notes by Afrobeat historian Chris May.

‘Roforofo Fight’ (1972): Fela’s poetic use of broken English helped in resonating his message throughout Anglophone Africa.

The lyrics of ‘Roforo Fight’ illustrate Fela’s frustration at intolerant, violent human behaviour by depicting a fight that breaks out in the streets in Lagos.

‘Go Slow’ is a 17:22 minute groove of first-generation funk featuring a rhythmic interplay so intrinsic to Fela’s Afrobeat. Lyrically, the song uses traffic jams in Lagos as a metaphor to critique the harmful social and environmental impact of urbanisation.
