Description
Captain Beefhearts 1982 release Ice Cream For Crow was his final recording before retiring from the music business forever to devote himself to full time painting. A more somber affair than the previous record, Doc At The Radar Station, it is still a strong final musical statement from him. A more streamlined new Magic Band is back for this recording and masterfully help send the Captain off in style. Featuring hit songs (in an alternate universe!) such as The Host The Ghost The Most Holy-O, Hey Garland I Dig Your Tweed Coat and 81 Poop Hatch.
This was the final Magic Band album and a very bleak affair it is. However it is a superb album from an excellent-sounding band, fairly reminiscent of Decals, but without the occasional levity that made Decals the classic that it is. There is a weariness and a heaviness to many of the Crow songs which makes it a perfect close to a fascinating story.
