Description
If is the debut solo album from Bill Ryder-Jones (formally of The Coral).
Written as a tribute to Italian avant-garde author Italo Calvinos postmodern novel If On A Winters Night A Traveller, If is mapped out as soundtrack inspired by the book.
Grand orchestral movements sit side by side with stark, nakedly emotional vocal pieces that weave a
bleak but beautifully moving and always visceral narrative.
If will appeal to fans of Max Richter and Hauschkas work as well as resonate with listeners seeking a similar quietude and often soaring work similar to those of Bon Iver and Smog.
A film, entitled A Film Called If has been made to accompany the album by a team behind videos for Damien Hirst, Adam Curtis (including most of his BBC documentaries), Julian Temple and the V&A. It will be streamed on a loop to which The Guardian and Pitchfork will point their readers in a joint premiere.
The film will also tour the country over the coming months in partnership with Picturehouse Cinemas and has its first screening November 15th at the Aubin Wills cinema in London.
