Description
“Its obvious this self-titled Nirvana anthology exists primarily as a vehicle to sell one song and no, its not the one you think.
The number in question is the previously unreleased gem “You Know Youre Right”, the last song the band completed before Kurt Cobain went on his final downward spiral. And listening to the bleak but brilliant track, with its trademark soft-loud dynamic tension, darkly propulsive groove and lyrics that seem tragically ironic in hindsight (“Things have never been so swell / I have never felt as well”), its clear the rest of the CD could easily have been phoned in. But give the folks at Geffen credit; they put a little effort into it. So, along with the obvious hits Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, In Bloom, Heart Shaped Box and so on theyve included odds n ends like Been A Son and Sliver (which originally appeared on singles) and a wide-bodied remix of Pennyroyal Tea that was pulled after Cobains 1994 death.” – Tinnitist
“[‘Nirvana’] does a pretty decent job of setting out what it wants to accomplish which is paint an accurate picture of the groups more radio-friendly side…
When the album first came out in 2002, much ado was made of the then-unreleased track You Know Youre Right, to date the last studio recording to come out from the group. Its a powerful track, and one of the best singles the group ever released. If buying this album was the only way one could hear the song, it would be a worthwhile purchase just to do so.
But Nirvana does have a pair other rarities as well. At the time of its release, it was the first place where anyone could legally hear the Scott Litt single remix of Pennyroyal Tea which was pulled and shelved in the wake of Kurts death. The mix isnt that different, it punches up the drums and vocals a bit, but its a nice inclusion regardless and it makes sense as the album is largely singles collection. Nirvana also includes the original version of Been A Son which before was only previously available on the Blew EP. Nice choice too, as it is way better than the version that made its way to Incesticide.
Nirvana is as good as it could possibly be.” – Mostly Retro
