Their long out-of-print second album, featuring Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann and Nicky Hopkins! Includes Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (and Loud, Loud Music), California Day, Sweet Lovin One, I Dont Need No Doctor, Hello Mary Lou, and more.
The history of the New Riders of The Purple Sage will forever be entwined with that of their fellow travelers, the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia co-founded the New Riders with John Dawson and David Nelson as an opportunity to play pedal steel guitar. Dawson and Nelson played on Dead masterpieces American Beauty and Workingmans Dead. Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart rounded out the New Riders rhythm section until David Torbert took over on bass and Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane fame took over on drums.
To add to all that star power, Powerglide features noted British pianist Nicky Hopkins (Beatles, Kinks, Stones) on keyboards. Torberts California Day is a gem, a hymn to the West Coast with some beautiful slide and fuzz guitar work; Contract, is an equally impressive blend of country rock and old west imagery. This wasnt music desperate for chart success, but a soundtrack to an outlaw, countercultural lifestyle.
