The 2003 Richard Linklater hit comedy School of Rock follows a failed wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Completely disinterested in academic work, Dewey Finn (Jack Black) decides to create his own curriculum, turning his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. And the accompanying soundtrack rocks just as hard as the laugh-out-loud film. Featuring old-school hits from icons like Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, AC/DC, The Doors, The Who and Black Sabbath – and teaching listeners a thing or two with the inclusion of then relative newcomers like The Darkness and The Black Keys plus songs from Black and his chorus of students. Rock educate yourself with a collection that plays like a virtual Cliff Notes of major hits.
Now nearly two decades old, School of Rock boasts cult-classic status. While Jack Black is front-and-centre of the comedy’s wild success, it’s the gold-standard soundtrack which propels the film forwards into stardom. Truthfully? It’s nothing short of one of cinema’s greatest collection of esteemed rock hits.
