Originally released in 1977, Billy Joels fifth studio album, The Stranger, was his breakthrough and marked the first of a series of highly successful collaborations with producer Phil Ramone, whose mastery of the recording studio provided a sublime sonic context for Joels timeless songs and classic performances. The Stranger went on to become one of the top-selling albums of that year, peaking at No. 2 on the charts.
It won two Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Just The Way You Are, was nominated for Album of the Year, and generated four indelible singles: Just The Way You Are, Only The Good Die Young, Shes Always A Woman, and Movin Out (Anthonys Song), which have all gone on to become absolute classics.
Ranked 67 on Rolling Stones list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and certified ten-times platinum, Joels artistic and commercial smash remains a pop-rock benchmark. Better still, it now sounds astonishing.
