Former Mercury Music Prize nominees Young Knives won plenty of praise for Barbarians, their first album in seven years, on its initial digital release last autumn. Here it comes to wax – in limited numbers – for those who prefer physical products. Lyrically, the album takes aim at all manner of targets – Brexit, the Tories, right-wing reaction to the Black Lives Matter Movement, and so on – with the accompanying music veering between fuzzy indie-rock, doom-laden alternative rock intensity, jangling 1980s indie revivalism, mutated metal and occasional oddball experimental interludes. It’s good to have them back, all told, and confirmed fans will really enjoy this belated comeback set.
